Red Kite Yurts

Yurts Custom Built in Scotland

Red Kite Yurts continued...

Sam and I worked together one weekend to help complete a 12ft yurt for a community project in the Gorbals, Glasgow. With the expertise from Hal Wynn-Jones company Turkmen Gers, and encouragement from Lucy and Nitsann, who lived up beyond Foulis Wester, Perthshire,  I got my steam box up and running and produced my 2nd yurt in time for the WOMAD festival in 2001. With the addition of a Parp Industries wood stove, and a wooden floor and door my yurt had become a calm comfortable and relaxing space.

My yurts have been used for Halloween parties, storytelling, displays for the Forestry Commission and the Scottish Natural Heritage, a Highland Dance troupe, music recitals, festivals, therapy workshops, and as a tea-tent.

The yurt has proved an excellent educational resource introducing people to traditional methods of woodworking. In addition the yurt has been a tool in that stimulates basic yurt making courses encouraging people to work together to create a living space.
